How to Know God is Autistic

Why Your Prayers Need to Be Dangerously Specific

God is literal. God is funny. God is creative.

…And God is autistic!!!

You know, sometimes God is funny, ha ha. And sometimes, God is funny nuh uh!

A writing fellow friend of mine shared a story about how she was so tired she wanted to take not one break, she wanted two! (And no, she wasn’t talking about a Kit Kat!)

Fast forward a couple pages, and SURPRISE! Tink tink done tripped on a curb and broke one leg… And the other ankle!

Her beautiful brown self was laid up in the hospital with flowers from friends, nurses changing her bed sheets while she was at PT, and later, her lovely sis-in-law doing her laundry!

God took her “two breaks” literally. A lil too literally!

It made me think of that time that I was planning in November to visit a friend in England in August. And life happened as it does.

In April when I was started looking at flights, my friend and I put a hard stop on my trip.

She was stressed and overwhelmed with work and her business. And I was hesitant because I didn’t know where or how I was gonna be work-wise come August. I just knew I was feeling the tug to quit my job, I (erroneously!) thought, who got money for that?!

Then in July, to my surprise and surely not God’s, I quit my job.

And in August, I visited my family and they said they were planning a last minute trip to England.

Which oooobviously meant I was going to England, too!

I bought a plane ticket and two days later, we were off!

God said yes. I just forgot to read the fine print.

So, what was the problem?!

That I didn’t place not nan conditions on this trip when I was planning it!

My family was planning a last minute trip to England… To attend a friend’s funeral.

Like YEAH GOD, OBVS I wanted to go to England but I felt like you should’ve known that I wanted to go under good/ safe/ healthy conditions.

“IN GOOD AND PERFECT WAYS”, AND SHIT!

I know I ain’t say that but… YOU’RE GOD! YOU KNOW MY HORT (read: HEART)!

And my heart wasn’t specific.

My request surely wasn’t, either.

And before you think I’m just telling you somebody else’s story—I’m not! I’ve learned this lesson the hard way, too! My prayers have gotten longer, more detailed, and significantly more specific. After all, God is still autistic. I’m just a better communicator now.

So yes, I ended up in England… But that was only because a family friend died! So like my friend’s broken bones and my trip to England, me repito: sometimes God is funny ha ha. And sometimes, God is funny nuuuh uuuh!

God Is Autistic and I Have Receipts

Immediately after reading her story I thought about my trip to England and I wrote this:

I decided that surely love—God herself!—lowkey, highkey?!— most definitely is autistic!

Because hooow could she be so literal and giving and generous and unintentionally (?) but actively hiiiiiiilarious? She focuses exclusively on the good, the light, the joy. She has one main interest with a few side hobbies. The main? Love, of course! OK, that’d be like naming herself. God’s main interest? FREEDOM!

Side hobbies? Peace. Transformation… Vengeance?

A Holy Petition for Divine Precision

Dearest, Highest God,

We learned the lesson. We will be more specific with our hopes, dreams, and desires. In good and perfect ways.

And so it is. Ase. Ameen. Aaamen!

The Precision Continues

You asked. God delivered — exactly what you said, not what you meant. And maybe that’s the invitation: to get honest, get specific, and extend yourself the grace to say exactly what your heart needs. Because a vague vision gets a literal God — and beloved, she is taking notes. Write the vision. Make it plain. Name what you actually want, down to the conditions, the details, the “and I meant it in a good way, God!”

If you’re ready to do that work—the real, precise, soul-level kind—I’d love to walk with you from where you are to where you want to be.
